Four Barbecue Side Dishes That Will Steal The Show This Summer

Although this summer may not feel as ‘normal’ as we’d like, nothing is stopping you from dusting off the BBQ and getting creative. Whilst many traditional BBQ’s are centred around the burgers and sausages, why not try something different? Have a go at making these 4 simple side dishes that will be the perfect accompaniments to any BBQ.

Caprese Salad

This simple and delicious Italian salad will make the perfect complement to any BBQ. Made with just 3 key ingredients this salad is so easy it doesn’t even need a recipe!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Tomatoes
  • Fresh Mozzarella
  • Basil Leaves

Simply slice all your ingredients, dress with extra virgin olive oil and salt just before serving and you’re good to go!

Guacamole and Tortilla Chips

This may come as a surprise as it is not a traditional side dish to a BBQ, however homemade guacamole and tortilla chips can be the perfect start off to your meal. Making both the guacamole and chips from scratch is so easy and taste so much better than shop-bought.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

For the Guacamole:

  • 2 Avocados
  • Juice of 1 ½ Limes
  • Finely chopped coriander
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Hot sauce of your choice

For the Chips:

  • Corn Tortillas
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Salt

Recipe Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200C/180C fan
  2. Prepare the tortilla chips by cutting them into triangles and placing on a baking tray.
  3. Drizzle with vegetable oil and add a good amount of salt, ensure all the chips are evenly coated.
  4. Bake for 7-8 minutes.
  5. Whilst the chips are baking, scoop out your avocados into a bowl and mash with the back of a fork until you’ve reached the desired consistency.
  6. Add in your lime juice, salt pepper and hot sauce and mix.
  7. Garnish with your chopped coriander and you’re ready to serve with the chips. Enjoy!

Bacon and Blue Cheese Potato Salad

This may not be a traditional potato salad, but why not change it up a bit! Made with smoked bacon, soured cream and blue cheese this potato salad is certainly not like any other.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 500g New Potatoes
  • 100g Smoked Bacon Lardons
  • 4 tbsp Soured Cream
  • 50g Roquefort
  • 4 Spring Onions

Recipe Steps:

  1. Boil your new potatoes until tender and drain.
  2. Fry of your bacon lardons until crispy and set aside to cool.
  3. Slice spring onions and add into a bowl with your soured cream and Roquefort.
  4. Mix together and tip in your cooked potatoes, ensuring all potatoes are covered evenly.
  5. Top with some more spring onions and serve!

Rainbow Coleslaw

This dish will be sure to add a pop of colour to your BBQ, whilst tasting great at the same time. Although this dish may have quite a few ingredients, once all the chopping is out of the way it’ll be ready in no time!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 300g red cabbage
  • 150g white cabbage
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 red onion
  • 3 grated carrots
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 100g mayonnaise
  • 50g natural yoghurt
  • Coriander

Recipe Steps:

  1. Mix all of the chopped vegetables in a large bowl.
  2. In a smaller dish make the dressing by mixing the lime juice, mayonnaise and natural yoghurt.
  3. Pour the dressing over the veg and mix thoroughly, ensuring everything is covered.
  4. Garnish with coriander and pop in the fridge to chill before serving and you’re done!
