Four Movies To Watch On A Rainy Autumn Day

by Olivia Frost

Autumn is here! What better way to celebrate than to put on your favourite throwback movies to help you settle into the new season?! A rainy day snuggled up on the sofa with a hot chocolate, fluffy blanket and a cosy movie sounds like the perfect autumn day to me.

Here’s my break down of the best four movies to get you feeling set for autumn!

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star in this 80’s classic! Although it is a rom-com, When Harry Met Sally is definitely not your average smooth-sailing romance film. The film starts when Harry and Sally meet just before sharing  a drive across America to New York City. The story unfolds over twelve years of chance encounters with each other. From being “just friends” to becoming a couple and everything in between, Harry and Sally’s story is not an easy ride. This film is sure to make the perfect autumn-day watch.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Get into the spirit with this iconic Halloween staple! The movie tells the tale of the Sanderson sisters, starting in 17th Century Salem, where it is the witches’ mission to suck out the souls of children. Although this sounds extremely dark and gruesome – I promise you it’s not! Hocus Pocus is a hilarious comedy – with musical scenes, a talking cat and fantastic costumes. This film is a true feminist masterpiece, filled with strong female leads. Cosy up with the Sanderson Sisters and light your favourite pumpkin candle for ultimate autumn vibes!

13 Going On 30 (2004)

This feel-good rom-com is sure to get you laughing as well as tearing up! If you loved Tom Hanks’ Big (1988) then you are sure to love 13 Going On 30 too! The story follows 12-year-old Jenna Rink, who wishes she was “30, flirty and thriving”. On her 13th birthday, she gets exactly what she wishes for. She wakes up, having been magically transported 17 years into the future, as her 30-year-old self. Jenna soon realises being 30 isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and wants to go back to her teen self again. The moral of the film is not to wish your life away! Many of us wish we were older or wish life would move a bit quicker – but what is most important is living in the now. The romantic plot is sure to make you feel cosy and warm inside.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

One of Steven Spielberg’s best creations! E.T. is a classic movie lots of us would have watched with our family when we were younger. Its familiarity is sure to give you a nostalgic sense of warmth. It is a timeless classic that can be enjoyed at any age. The emotional story of the friendship between 10-year-old Elliot and E.T., who gets left behind by his spaceship, will tug at your heartstrings! The heart-warming scene with Elliot and E.T. on their flying bike across the sky is iconic and the poignant ending is sure to get the tears flowing.

Next time there’s a rainy autumn day (which shouldn’t be too far away) be sure to watch these feel-good movies!
