How We Met
Demarcus and I met about seven and a half years ago at Middle Tennessee State University’s step show. We were following each other on Instagram for quite a while and my best friend was a childhood friend of his. This meant that we would always like each others’ pictures. One night, I was out bowling with my friends. I got REAL bold and decided to post a comment on his picture to tell him how good he looked!
I instantly regretted it and went back to delete the comment, so I didn’t seem too forward. What I failed to realize, however, was that deleting it would not prevent him from seeing it. The comment had already popped up on his phone! He responded confused since he saw the comment was deleted. Argh! From that moment forward, we never stopped talking. We met in person a week later at our college step show. Who would have known that seven and a half years later I’d be preparing to steal his last name?!
There wasn’t necessarily a pivoting moment where we knew we wanted to spend our life together. I think just watching each other grow and mature while also being there for one another through some really hard times showed us that we had such a strong unbreakable bond. It just really highlighted the amount of love we truly had for each other.
I did have an inkling that the proposal could potentially be happening the day it did, yet I was still so SO surprised when I turned around and saw him on one knee. I definitely did not expect to see family or friends there let alone the rock that he’d be putting on my finger!!
On February 22nd, I was scheduled to work at my salon doing makeup from 1 pm to 7 pm. On Monday the 17th, though, they reached out to me to let me know there was a mix up with scheduling, so I was no longer needed to come in that day. I was a little confused as to how that happened but didn’t think much of it. Then, I had a photographer friend of mine who usually did our couples shoots for us to reach out to me. She said she needed a couple to model for her on Saturday the 22nd. As we are always easy to work with, she said that she wanted to reach out and see if we would be interested. Her work is incredible, so, of course, I said yes! Her only request was for us to be colour coordinated and more on the dressier side.
Around that same time, both my best friend and now mother-in-law reached out to me to go get pedicures. I said yes to my mother-in-law, and on Wednesday night, we went to our favourite spot to get our nails done. I still didn’t think anything of it, though!
The Proposal Day
The day had finally come. On Saturday, February 22nd, we were getting all fancied up for our photoshoot. Demarcus had already bought this really nice suit that he hadn’t got a chance to wear yet, and I had already bought this really pretty dress months ago that I was saving for the perfect occasion. Little did I know that the occasion would be our engagement!
We arrived at this really nice hotel where we were taking the pictures. We were walking around, stopping randomly to get a few shots, doing some single shots, etc. Finally, we got to my final single shot next to this beautiful waterfall and I’m standing there posing and looking up to the ceiling. My sweet photographer is cheering me on letting me know that I look great. She tells me to just hold that pose, tilt my head up a little more, etc. Then she says, “Okay, now turn around.”
I turn around and at first, I just see my handsome fiancé on one knee. I look up and I see our family (both in-state and out-of-state) and our friends standing behind him. That is the moment I lost it!! I immediately started crying. Soaking in everything that had just happened, I became so overwhelmed with joy . I was so surprised and so freaking excited that I get to marry my best friend!!
What made the proposal so special to me was how much attention to detail Demarcus put into the planning of the proposal. Getting my dad and his fiancée to fly in from Florida/Ohio, having my best friend there, his family there, and just allowing them all to come together and be a part of such a special day. It was amazing to see how much attention he pays to the things I love most and would’ve wanted in a proposal picture, such as the beautiful view beside us with the waterfall, and the greenery, and just overall a picture-perfect location.
There is not a single thing I would’ve changed about my proposal story. I loved every aspect of it, but especially being able to celebrate that moment with friends and family! It is a memory I will hold in my heart forever. I’ll always be so grateful for it.
Where We Are Now
Although the pandemic caused a slight delay in our wedding planning, we have truly enjoyed this time to soak up just being engaged. We are excited to dive back into planning soon, and look forward to celebrating our wedding in the fall of next year! Demarcus and I have so many plans for our future. We hope to start a family, buy a house, and start our own businesses. We’re also looking forward to continuing to grow and succeed in our careers.
We also love to travel so that’s definitely something we’ve been missing and are looking forward to after being quarantined for so long! Our future looks so bright and we are ecstatic to see all that God has in store in for us!
