Whether you believe in New Year’s resolutions or not, it is no doubt a time to refocus and work towards new goals for the year. Self-care is something that we should focus on all year round. However, there’s no better time to start practising more self-care than at the beginning of a new year.
New year’s resolutions are notorious for being broken within a few days, but that is usually because they are to do with giving up a bad habit. A better way to view New Year’s resolutions is focusing on something that you’d like to do to improve yourself this year. Something that will better you and your wellbeing.
Self-care doesn’t mean that you have to do big gestures every day. Just simple little things that can help to improve your state of mind and wellbeing. Here are 5 self-care resolutions that you can make this year.
Create a morning and evening self-care routine
Practising a regular morning and evening routine every day will ensure that you give yourself the time needed to get ready in the morning and wind down in the evening. Having a fixed routine is extremely important for keeping on top of your self-care, meaning that you never forget or “run out of time” to focus on yourself. Include anything in your routines that you love to do to wake-up and wind-down every day. This can be anything from your skin-care routine to going for an early-morning walk. Writing down your routine will make them more set in stone. This means that you will be more likely to stick to them and give yourself the time you need to focus on you.
Replace your phone for a book
More often than not we spend too much time on our phones and not enough time sitting back and appreciating the wonders of a good book. Although the endless scrolling through Instagram may seem a lot more appealing, social media cannot replace the sensation of getting lost in a novel. Reading a book allows you to get lost in someone else’s world for just a short moment on time. It’s the perfect way to escape reality when life feels like it’s getting a little too much to handle. Dedicate some time when you’d usually be on your phone to pick up a book. Any free time you have: on your commute to work, before you go to sleep or on your lunch break.
Treating yourself is the perfect way to look after your wellbeing. Whether this is treating yourself to a pamper evening or even taking yourself out on a date day! Plan a full day out to do all of the things that you want to do. Plan the date out, just like you would if you were going out with a loved one or a friend. Take yourself on a long walk, grab a coffee and a slice of your favourite cake! Whilst you’re at it, go on a shopping spree for things you’ve been eyeing up for a while! Doing these treat days every once in a while will be massively helpful for your wellbeing.
Cut out stress triggers
You may not be able to get rid of every single trigger. Yet there certain things in your life that cause unnecessary stress that you can cut out. Social media can quite often cause feelings of stress and anxiety. This is often due to the nature of comparison that comes alongside it. Unfollowing any accounts that don’t make you feel good about yourself will help to improve your self-esteem and wellbeing. You can also reduce stress by cutting out unnecessary engagements you may feel obliged to say yes to. Remember it is okay to say no sometimes! If you feel like you are too busy to meet your friend on that particular day then just say! They will be sure to understand and rearranging for a less busy time will put your mind at ease.
