Pumpkin Carving: Your Guide To The Perfect Pumpkin

by Olivia Frost

It’s that time of year once more! Halloween is approaching us fast and it’s time to dig out your pumpkin carving kit again. Pumpkin carving is the perfect way to get your creative juices flowing whilst getting you in the Halloween spirit at the same time!

It can be tricky to choose a design that will be sure to wow without spending hours on end just carving. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you to carve away to your heart’s delight!

Cookie Cutters

If you don’t feel like carving a traditional spooky face this year, why not try making simple shapes using fun cookie cutters? Carving around the shape of stars, moons or even something more Halloween themed, such as ghosts or bats, will ensure that your carving is perfectly neat and unique. It is an easy way to get your desired shape perfectly without the hassle!

Pick The Right Pumpkin

Choosing a pumpkin that has a green stem will ensure that it is as fresh as can be – meaning that your pumpkin will last right through to October 31st and beyond! A pumpkin with thick walls may make carving a little harder but will make your carving masterpiece last much longer. Your pumpkin doesn’t have to be perfect though! If it has a few imperfections, be sure to carve on the best looking side as this will be the side on display. Your pumpkin may have some bumps on the outside, which will add to the effect of your carving! Choose a design that will go with the bumps, such as a witches’ face. The bumps will look like warts on the witches’ face and will give your design a little something extra!

Don’t Leave Anything Inside

Make sure you don’t leave a single thing inside your pumpkin! Leaving some seeds or guts inside of your pumpkin will mean that it will get mouldy quickly and will leave it looking a bit worse for wear. A pumpkin carving kit will help you to achieve a perfectly clean pumpkin! Using a spoon with a serrated edge as well as your hands will ensure that you don’t leave a trace of guts or seeds inside your pumpkin. However – you don’t have to throw this all away! Instead of letting all this deliciousness go to waste, why not make a warming pumpkin soup or even roast the seeds for the perfect autumnal snack.

Spice Up Your Pumpkin

If carving isn’t your thing, try making a homemade potpourri with your pumpkin instead. It’s the perfect way to get your home smelling ready for Autumn! By sprinkling the inside of your pumpkin with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, your house will be filled with delicious aromas as soon as it’s lit! The spicy aromas of autumn will create the perfect cosy atmosphere!

I hope these tips and tricks help you out this Halloween. Whatever you decide to do with your pumpkin the main thing is to have fun doing it! Happy carving!
