by Olivia Frost

Today is “National Road Trip Day”, and to mark the occasion we have provided you the perfect guide to ensure that your trip goes as smoothly as possible. From making sure you have all the travel essentials to choosing the right soundtrack – we’ve got you covered!

With COVID-19 restrictions gradually being lifted more and more every month, we are well on the way to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! And what better way to celebrate our freedom than hitting the road with friends or loved ones. Whether you are planning a trip across the country or just sticking local – road trips are one of the best ways to make memories and have fun.

Here are our top tips on how to make your road trip one to remember!

Safety first

Although it may seem boring, safety is definitely the most important thing to consider before setting off on any road trip. Undertaking safety checks includes checking your tyre pressure, oil level, lights, screen wash and fuel level. As well as these essential checks, it is also a good idea to pack an emergency kit, including first aid supplies, spare clothes and blankets, in case of a breakdown. Once all of these boring (but extremely important) checks are out of the way, you are ready for the fun to begin!

Remember the essentials

We know what it’s like when you’re rushing around frantically trying to remember to pack everything before a trip! However, the beauty of road trips is that you can pack up all of your belongings the night before your trip, which will help you be more organised and a lot less stressed in the morning. Having a check-list is a must-have when packing for your road trip. Why not print out this one so you will be prepared and ready to go!

Choose the right snacks

If you are going to be in your car a fairly long time, you are going to need to bring some snacks! However, choosing the right ones carefully will mean that you won’t make a mess or make your car smell for the remainder of the trip! Packing dry foods such as nuts, popcorn, dried fruit and sweets will work best for your trip. You can also fill up a flask with your choice of hot drinks, to save you stopping off and paying for a caffeine hit when you start feeling a little tired! You should also be sure to pack reusable water bottles, which can be filled up when you reach each destination.

Decide on your route

It is important to make sure that you have planned your route well in advance, to avoid any slip-ups or getting lost. It is also a good idea to check out the traffic situation before you leave to make sure that you don’t find yourself being held up. There are plenty of road trip planners available online, all you need to do is decide where you want to end up and the computer will do the rest for you! Create the perfect playlist

If you are going on a road trip with a group, why not create a collaborative Spotify playlist, which means that everyone will have songs on their to suit their tastes. This avoids any squabbles over music choice and the awkward silence whilst trying to find the perfect song. Just give everyone the link to the playlist and allow them to choose their favourite road-trip songs, plug in your phone and hit shuffle! It is as easy as that!

So there you have it. You now have all of our road trip wisdom up your sleeve, so if you are sure to follow all of our tips you are sure to have a safe, smooth sailing trip! All that’s left now is to hit the road!
