by Lucy Freeman

It’s fair to say we’re having a rocky couple of years; one minute it’s going to be our year, and the next we’re stuck inside wondering what to do with ourselves! But nothing beats spending your time curled up on the sofa with your favourite snacks and watching feel-good films. If the ups and downs of this year have got you feeling low, then why not give yourself some nostalgia and watch a bunch of old films that create happy vibes! Here’s our top five films to give you a blast from the past if this year is just a little too much for you.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Is it just me or do you always get a burst of motivation after watching Elle Woods absolutely smash her law degree? Legally Blonde is 19 years old, yet it’s still a film I love to return to. Elle Woods’ academic boyfriend dumps her for not being smart enough, but she fights back and goes to Harvard Law School. The film is a perfect reminder that you can do anything that you put your mind to.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Join Ferris in a trip to Chicago with his friends after he pulls a sicky day at school. As a child, it’s a fantasy to be able to casually take the day off school and drive around in a Ferrari. But that’s what makes the film so nostalgic, when you’re younger there’s something so thrilling about watching Ferris avoid responsibility. It’s a wish I guess a wish we could have sometimes as adults!

Elf (2003)

I won’t lie, I’m so guilty of watching Elf even if it’s not Christmas but hey, no one said there were any rules, right? This blast from the past film will fill you with so much joy as you’re in bundles of laughter with Buddy the elf. The film came out 17 years ago and it’s one Christmas film you can never get bored of. Watch as Will Ferrell takes on New York for the first time after living as an elf his whole life. Who cares if it’s only August, give it a watch!

Toy Story (1995)

Everyone needs to relive their childhood with a favourite cartoon film, and Toy Story is perfect for that. Andy, a cowboy toy feels threatened and jealous when Buzz, a new spaceman figure becomes the top toy in his boy’s bedroom. Watch as Andy and Buzz kindle a friendship after they end up lost, and are on a journey to get back to their boy. Toy Story let’s your imagination as a child open up as you see toys come to life; why not relive this child-like feeling with this cartoon film?

Matilda (1996)

A young girl who is very different from her family reminds us that reading certainly doesn’t make you a nerd, and it’s a fantastic way to escape reality. As well as this, the film has a little magical element that makes us smile and giggle. Matilda is a fascinating character to watch as you get to see her learning to control her powers. As a child I always wished I could do things she could do! There’s no better time to relive this feeling and to have a little dance to ‘Little Bitty Pretty One’ (the fun, feel-good song that features throughout the film).
