As much as we try not to think about it, many of us are in quarantine right now. The reason for this is both nerve-wracking and positive. We are in the midst of a global pandemic! That is very real and terrifying. However, we are all in this together and are staying home to get through it as safely as possible. Having time to ourselves with no huge strings of responsibility attached is something we normally find ourselves dreaming of, right? Well, when sitting at work from nine to five with piles of papers to do, hours of work to complete, unhappy clients or customers, and a seemingly never-ending list of issues to solve can make long to sleep in and do nothing.
In an unexpected series of events, we’ve now got that free time. But for people like myself – we are bored! Yes, there is a pandemic and yes, that is important! But, we’re allowed to say it, we need something to do!
If you feel like some self-care
Self-care can mean anything from making yourself your favourite cup of coffee to taking a bubble bath or letting yourself sleep in for an hour or two. But one thing I have been enjoying is meditating. Try sitting down and taking a few deep breaths, it’ll be sure to help you unwind! So why not make it a daily routine? Make a little space in your house, fill it with blankets, cushions, your favourite candles, or even soft music. Set a time every day to sit there and close your eyes. Even just for five minutes. You can simply try focusing on your breath. Or you can start from your head to your toes, making an effort to focus on slowly relaxing each body part. You could even practice incorporating a mantra in and really hone in your skills.
If meditating isn’t your thing, why not focus on taking more baths, doing a hair or face mask, giving yourself a manicure, wearing your favourite sweats and just listening to music? The key is to do something – anything – that makes you happy. This can mean different things to different people, but it’s important to give yourself more downtime than usual. Have an extra glass of wine, watch an extra episode, splurge on that one thing you’ve wanted to get forever. This quarantine is your time to thrive!
If you feel like getting crafty
If you’re artsy and love crafts, or even if you’re not, there are many ways to get creative during quarantine without needing much guidance! I’ve seen so many online kits lately for things like candles, soap, and more. Plus, it’s always rewarding to make something yourself that you can cherish and use because it becomes more meaningful. Candles are a super-easy way to make something that you can be proud of and use daily. They’re much simpler than they seem. All you need is wax, a wick, and any fragrances or herbs you want to add in!
With summer in full bloom, now is also the time to play around with drawing and painting! There are so many online resources to learn all sorts of artistic skills, and no matter if you’re talented or not, whatever you make will be beautiful and yours. If you live with a significant other, your family, or a friend, channel your inner Bob Ross and do your own paint party with them!
Epoxy resin is also another super crafty thing I keep seeing online lately. All you need for it is resin and hardener, and you can make all sorts of jewellery and decorative items! Or, if you have an old dresser or bookshelf, why not spice it up and paint it? Feeling like your home has been boring lately? Re-paint a room! It’s amazing how something so simple can brighten up our day. Try to do one thing every day that sparks your inner artist!
If you feel like following your dreams
During quarantine, we have had more time to ourselves. If you have a big project you’ve been putting off, a long-term goal you put on pause, or a big idea you’ve been toying with, now’s the time to give it attention! Whether you want to learn a language or play the guitar, why not start it now? Do you want to write poetry, practice makeup, learn how to sing or learn a new skill? You have the time to do it. Go for it!
If you’re just feeling stuck
Read and write as much as you can! Now is the perfect time to visit your bookshelf and read whatever you’ve been dying to read but never have time to start. With so many amazing books coming out, it’s hard to resist. If you’re like me, you probably also love writing. Journaling is the best way to have a relationship with yourself. With everything going on in our world today, we all need someone to talk to. Sometimes, that person is ourselves. Write a poem, write an idea, write about your day, write about your dreams, whatever it is, just write! This will keep you busy and make you feel less alone.
If all these ideas sound just, well, not you, that’s okay. Something I think we all can benefit from right now is getting outside. Whether you live have a garden, or you live in a big city with more concrete than trees, you’re not alone. Getting outside and escaping quarantine life for just a few minutes a day can make such a tremendous difference in our mood. Sometimes just soaking up the sunshine or smelling the flowers can just re-wire your whole perspective. Find a park, find a trail, find a river. Just find any place outside! Focus on everything beautiful around you, and let yourself stay out of your head for the day.
