Brain Dump Journaling is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: dumping every single thought that occurs in your brain into a journal in order to declutter your thoughts. Though it can seem a little daunting at first, this concept is a brilliant way to actually figure out what’s going on in your head. Here are three of our favourite things about Brain Dump Journaling

1) It’s a great way to get in touch with how you’re feeling

Writing down every single thought that you have can seem like a scary and overwhelming task, but that’s not what Brain Dump Journaling is about. It’s actually pretty much the opposite. It means that there aren’t any parameters to what you have to write, and there’s no structure to follow; you’re free to write whatever you want and however you want without any boundaries at all.

If you find feelings difficult to articulate, this means that you can write paragraph after paragraph to try and put your thoughts into words without worrying about making sense. You could try using bullet points or spider diagrams, too – there really are no limits. Being able to express how you’re feeling in any form will help you to realise exactly what’s going on in your head, and from there you can try and figure out how to navigate this. After all, the first step in resolving a problem is realising that there is one. 

2) It helps you to see things from another perspective

When you’re all caught up in your head, it can be very easy to reinforce your own ideas or thoughts or narratives. Writing things down can help you to break that cycle. Having it all out in front of you means that you can read and re-read everything you’ve been mulling over, which also means that you’ll be able to see what you’ve missed. Maybe there’s an important aspect to a situation that you’ve glossed over, or a vital perspective that you didn’t consider. Being able to take note of this will help you to realise all sides of a topic rather than just the ones you’ve been focusing on. Maybe you’ll even be able to find some solutions you hadn’t considered, too! 

3) Brain Dump Journaling helps you to reflect

One of the best things about journaling is that it allows you to capture a snapshot of your life at the time that you’re doing it. Some things feel inescapable; it’s as if you’ll be in that situation or feel that way forever. Only when you’re out of it do you realise that that’s not true. Being able to see every single one of your thoughts from a situation a few months ago will help you to realise how much you’ve grown and changed since then, and remind you that things won’t be the same forever.
